Steam-Ore

Steam-ore is a valuable mineral found in naturally occurring deposits on volcanic islands or mountains. The ore produces breaks down into water vapor when combusted and is considered to be one of the cleanest energy sources in the world. When its value was discovered about twenty years ago, numerous nations sought to control the supply. As a result a world war (referred to as the Great War) broke out over control of the mineral between the nations of northern hemisphere (Gamoid, Kestania, Coriland, and Antellas) against the nations of the southern hemisphere.

When all was finally settled the north won. Coriland and Kestania struck comprehensive trade deals with the people who lived in steam-ore rich areas. Gamoid subjugated them. Antellas is still working on “saving the heathens” and doesn’t care about the ore.

Steam-ore takes surprisingly few years to form (only about two decades) so renewable “farming” is possible so long as the core of the world remains molten and consumption is managed. Queen Tiara Lily Drosseler has created Steamworks factories in which new mining technology is being researched to make steam-ore use more efficient.

Seasons

The United Kingdom of Coriland does not have named months of the year (though 30 days periods are still called “months” in reference to the lunar cycles). Instead, their calendar is divided into four named “seasons”. Each season is about ninty to ninty-two days long. Approximate equivalents to our world are: Snow season – (Winter) January-March (90 days), Melt season – (Spring) April-June (92 days), Heat season – (Summer) July-September (91 days), Rain season – (Fall) October-December (92 days).

I only did this just to make things unnecessarily complicated. I take great joy in annoying people because I am a cat.

Drighton

A resort city on the southern coastline of The United Kingdom of Corliand. Famous for its moderate climate, white sand beaches and exorbitant housing prices, this city is almost exclusively populated by bloodborne nobles and industry magnates. Common folk cannot even afford to look at the gates of most of these houses.

Shoo. Begone with you, pauper! You’re ruining the view of my money!

Beruché

A wine region in the Republic of Kestania famous for its beautiful vineyards. Wines from this region are regarded as some of the best in the continent and the price for a single bottle starts at week’s pay for a factory worker.

The Upper and Lower Houses of the United Kingdom of Coriland

The United Kingdom of Corliand is run by a bicameral parliamentary government and monarch.

The Upper House of parliament is open only to bloodborne nobles or those that have legally inherited a noble title through familial adoption. As it is an honor to serve the nation, positions in the Upper House are unpaid, but turning down your seat might imply you didn’t have enough wealth to hold a title. Therefore, when noble families experience financial hardship, it leaves the door open for special interest groups to buy votes.

The lower house is open to all members of the general public and is a paid position but competition for the seats can be fierce. Sponsorships from special interest groups in exchange for campaign support are illegal, but common.

Despite parliament being the primary legislative body, the monarch of Coriland still holds a great deal of power. Only the King (or Queen) can approve military actions against other nations. In addition, should they choose to cast it, the monarch’s single vote in the Upper House has the equivalent power to 25% of the total number of nobles families. Laws require 66% approval from both houses to pass.

The Republic of Kestania

The Republic of Kestania is located in the heart of the continent. Gamoid lies to the north, Coriland to the west, Antellas to the south and Malfular to the east.

While Kestanians have the same Holy Text as Coriland and Gamoid, 45% of Kestanians are nonreligious with 40% being mildly religious, 14% devoutly religious and 1% being from an alternative religion. Kestanians view asexuality as an aberration and actively and openly discriminate against those who are not in a relationship. As a result, there is an underground market of “hubbies for hire” who provide evidence of a false relationship in order to allow those who cannot or do not want a romantic or sexual partner to live freely.

The manufacture of grain and fruit alcohol is a rich part of Kestanian culture and, as a result, they are often at odds with The Holy Nation of Antellas for being the largest supply of bootleg spirits.

Unlike Coriland and Gamoid, Kestania last names an inheritance are passed through the female lines.

The Kingdom of Gamoid

The Kingdom of Gamoid is a mountainous, snowy country located deep in the northeastern region of the continent bordering Kestania and Coriland.

The monarchy is supported by a modified feudal system. Nobles and the king are granted their titles by birthright and are the majority landowners in the country but are barred from participating in The Congress of the People. Peasants Commoners are elected as representatives for their district in “democratic” elections held in each fief every five years.

The Congress of the People is permitted to craft rules of social interactions, and decide how 25% of the national funds collected by taxation will be spent. The remainder divided into two pieces. 50% of the funds are used by the king to “provide military protection to the country”. The remaining 25% is given to the titled nobility to help “maintain a robust job market through the employment of the common man”.

It is well known that congress is rife with political corruption and all attempts by earnest common folk to claim more than nominal powers have resulted in their leaders “accidentally” dying.

Gamoid uses the same Holy Text as Kestania and Coriland. 50% of Gamoidians are devoutly religious, 35% are casually religious, 10% are nonreligious and 2% are an alternative religion. Gamoidians tolerate atheism but, due to a previous attempted occupation by Antellas, discriminant against followers of Solut. Gamoid and Kestania have a rocky relationship due to the the King of Gamoid using money and assassinations to influence the Kestania congressional elections.
